Frequently Asked Questions

Are the Mediterranean diets primarily plant-based?

Yes, the Mediterranean Diet consists primarily of plants. This ancient diet is primarily based on plant-based foods, such as fruits and vegetables, legumes (nuts), and seeds. Red meat, poultry, and fish can also be found in smaller amounts due to their provenance around the Mediterranean Sea. These protein sources can be omitted for those opting for a vegan or vegetarian lifestyle within this eating style. Other dairy sources, such as tofu and soy yogurt, are great alternative options for added nutrition and protein.

What is a Mediterranean diet's best fruit?

Fruits commonly found in the Mediterranean Diet include apples, oranges, grapes, melons, pears, figs, dates, and berries. Add fresh fruits to smoothie bowls or parfaits for extra nutrition. Greek yogurt with dates spread on toast is an excellent choice for breakfast. This provides natural sweetness without the use of processed sugars. Fresh fruit can be sliced and served over salads to add flavor and nutrients and satisfy sweet tooth cravings. For added antioxidants, you can also eat nuts and seeds like almonds and pistachios. Dark chocolate is another healthy snack from the Mediterranean Diet. Discover the diverse local foods that are considered to be staples in Mediterranean countries and enjoy the rich flavors of this ancient diet.

What foods are not allowed on a Mediterranean diet?

The Mediterranean diet prohibits certain food groups including processed foods and added sugar. Certain foods are not recommended to be eaten in order to retain the health-benefits associated with this eating pattern. While these foods may be acceptable as part of a healthy diet plan, it is not recommended that you consume them all the time.

On a Mediterranean diet, whole-grain breads and starches like white bread, sugary grains, and other highly processed baked goods are prohibited. These items may be quickly absorbed by your body as sugars which can lead to weight gain. These items are also less nutritious than whole grain options such as millet or quinoa.

Other sugars also fall within this category. You should limit your intake of sweetened drinks, including soda, teas with added sugars, juices, and other sugary beverages. They won't support weight loss or healthy nutritional profiles.

Red meats and processed meats are not recommended for Mediterranean-style meals. Red meats as well as processed meats are high in saturated fats. This raises the risk of heart disease and other metabolic syndrome-related illnesses. The association of nitrates in processed lunchmeat may lead to increased cancer risk. Avoid eating dairy products as they can contain high amounts of saturated fats.

According to nutrition experts, fish shouldn't be consumed more than three times per day.

Rice in the Mediterranean diet?

Mediterranean diets allow rice but encourage it. This diet encourages the consumption of fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Whole-grain white rice is a great carbohydrate source, providing energy for the body. It's also rich in dietary fiber, which can improve digestion as well as provide essential nutrients for your health such iron, B vitamins and magnesium. You can add rice to soups, stews, or salads. Limiting added fat could be beneficial where possible to stay within the guidelines of the Mediterranean diet when consuming rice-based dishes.
